Selected Works
When Pinchas Litvinovsky passed away in 1985, approximately 6,000 paintings remained in his home at 10 Kaf-Tet BeNovember Street in Jerusalem. His heirs, daughters Dr. Chloe Tal and Dafna Litvinovsky Slutzker, sought the assistance of Dr. Gideon Ofrat, a renowned art historian, author, and curator who was well-acquainted with Litvinovsky. They invited Dr. Ofrat to spend several weeks in the apartment, evaluate the extensive collection, and identify the works he considered of higher artistic value. Dr. Ofrat undertook the task and highlighted several hundred paintings as being particularly significant.
Years later, it became evident that Dr. Ofrat had been unaware of a substantial number of paintings stored in a ground-floor storage room outside the apartment. Consequently, while his selection was thoughtful and meaningful, it was not comprehensive.
In 2012, following Dafna Litvinovsky Slutzker's illness, her son, Alon Dean, became more involved in the management of Litvinovsky’s collection. Together, they decided to expand the evaluation process by enlisting additional experts to review the works.
The following art professionals were invited to participate:
• Dr. Irit Miller – Museologist, curator, and lecturer at the University of Haifa.
• David Marco – Gallery owner at the Panorama Center in Haifa.
These experts were asked to review the entire collection, which had been photographed to facilitate the process, assess the quality of the works, and identify those they deemed most valuable.
A fourth evaluator, Alon Dean himself, was included in the process despite lacking an artistic background. His role introduced a fresh perspective: his sole criterion was whether he would personally want to display a particular painting in his home. If his answer was affirmative, the painting was marked as one of higher value.
When the evaluations from all four participants were consolidated into a single list, it emerged that approximately 1,000 paintings had been identified as noteworthy by at least one evaluator. These selected works became the focus of this website.
The remaining paintings, which had not received a single positive evaluation and due to the pressing need to vacate Litvinovsky’s residence, were mostly destroyed.
The works featured in this category represent the finest selection from the group of 1,000 paintings, highlighting the essence of Litvinovsky's artistic legacy.
